FDIS helps Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service to support businesses better
Jon Bryan is a technical fire safety officer within the Prevention and Protection Department of Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and recently passed the FDIS Diploma examination.
He works with a team of very experienced people who are always keen to improve their technical knowledge. So when Jon was offered the chance to study the online Diploma programme he quickly signed up.
A large part of Jon's role is inspecting premises under the Fire Safety Order, or RRO as it is often known, and giving advice to business owners about their responsibilities and how they should improve fire safety measures. So the additional knowledge he has gained through the seven modules of the FDIS Diploma programme, which cover a range of topics including timber fire doors, metal fire doors, escape doors, glazing, seals and ironmongery, will help him to recommend appropriate solutions.
He says: "I found the extensive information about the standards to which fire doors and components are manufactured particularly useful. It was also good to be reminded of general technical information as well as learn about more specific details on British Standards and performance of materials. For instance, char rates for various timbers and how glazing affects the doors' fire performance. I really liked the way that the online tutorials work and the test questions were extremely helpful preparation for the final exam."
